Five ways to Financial Declutter in 2026
10 January 2026

How are your New Year’s resolutions going so far in 2026?
Maybe you’ve already started reorganising your home? But have you thought about giving your finances the same fresh start?
If you’re not sure where to begin, try these quick, practical steps:
-
Create a simple organising system. Even in 2026, the paper trail hasn’t completely disappeared. Letters, statements, and important documents still make their way through the letterbox. Rather than letting them pile up on countertops, put a simple structure in place. Set up clearly labelled folders for things like bank statements, insurance, loans, tax documents, and warranties. Having everything stored in one logical place makes it easier to stay on top of deadlines and reduces the visual (and mental!) clutter.
-
Use automation to your advantage! Technology can take a lot of pressure off your monthly to-do list. Setting up direct debits or standing orders for bills and loan repayments means fewer dates to remember and less chance of accidental missed payments. Most banks and credit unions now let you manage this online in just a few taps.
-
Switch to digital statements. If you want to reduce the amount of paperwork arriving each month, consider opting for online statements. Not only does it cut down on clutter, but it also makes past statements easier to find when you need them.
-
Follow the one-to-two rule. Brain Ford, Head of Financial Wellness at Truist, recommends keeping the number of financial providers you use to a minimum. Aim to keep no more than two of each type of account or service. For example: One main provider for your savings and borrowing needs (such as your credit union). One insurance provider for your home, car, or other policies. Fewer accounts mean fewer apps, fewer statements, and fewer things to keep track of.
-
Consolidate your accounts. If you have old credit cards or unused accounts sitting in the background, now is a good time to close them. You might also consider bringing multiple debts together into one affordable monthly repayment. Consolidating balances into a single, lower-cost loan can make budgeting much easier. Ts / Cs apply.
