Planning for University Costs?

education loan 2025

Do you have a child preparing to head off to university soon? Or perhaps you’re already planning for one, two or even three years’ time?

With tuition fees, living expenses, and student loans all adding up, higher education is one of the biggest financial commitments a family will face.

WHAT’S NEW?

COST OF LIVING AT UNIVERSITY

As of 2025, the average monthly living costs are £1,104, with the biggest monthly cost being rent at £540. This varies depending on which university location you chose.

HOW MUCH WILL PARENTS NEED TO CONTRIBUTE?

Maintenance loans are means-tested based on household income. The higher the parental income, the less a student receives, and parents are expected to make up this gap.

In England the maximum contribution is £5,200, in Scotland £3,000, and Northern Ireland £1,600.

GOOD NEWS FOR NORTHERN IRELAND STUDENTS

Students from Northern Ireland who chose to study at home, tuition fees are around HALF the cost of those in England, Scotland, and Wales – something worth considering when choosing a university.
