As families across Northern Ireland prepare for the new school year, back-to-school costs continue to put pressure on household budgets.
New research from the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) found that 71% of parents consider back-to-school costs a financial burden, while 37% said they are getting into debt to cover them.
Over half (59%) also said their back-to-school costs are higher than last year, with school uniforms identified as one of the main reasons for rising costs.
With uniforms, shoes, PE kits and now Technology (laptops and iPads), the back-to-school shop, especially those entering secondary school, can quickly become an expensive time of year for families.
Planning for the new school year
Before you shop, check what your child already has and make a list of what they actually need. Comparing prices and considering second-hand options can also help keep costs down.
ILCU research found 27% of parents are turning to credit cards to help cover school costs, while just 4% are turning to their credit union.
Use your Credit Union, not your credit card!
If you're a parent or guardian and facing the cost of getting ready for the new school year, our 0% School Uniform Loan could help spread the cost.
You can borrow up to £400 per child, repayable over 6 months at 0% APR, and no pledged shares are required.
To apply, members must have a Junior Account or associated family member account for a child or grandchild up to and including age 18. New accounts are welcome, and once your child's account is active, you can apply for the loan straightaway.
For example, if you borrow £400, your repayments would be just £67 per month for 6 months.
