Debt Awareness Week 2025

This Debt Awareness Week, we’re supporting debt help charity StepChange by raising awareness and understanding of the stigma around debt.  “Debt happens. Let’s deal with it.”

We want to challenge attitudes to debt and help people access the support they need.

Understanding Debt: Why it Happens

Rising costs, income changes, and easy credit access can lead to debt. Debt is not a sign of failure—it’s a common challenge that many face at some point in their lives AND it’s manageable!

Taking Control

Taking a realistic look at your income, expenses, and outstanding debts can help you develop a plan. Prioritizing essential expenses, exploring debt repayment options, and seeking professional advice can help break down debt into manageable steps.

Starting the Conversation

One of the biggest barriers to overcoming debt is the stigma attached to it. Don’t let shame hold you back. Talking openly about debt can make a huge difference. Whether it’s with a friend, family member, or financial expert, starting the conversation can lead to the support and guidance needed to regain control.

TALK to YOUR Credit Union FIRST before DEBT becomes a bigger problem.

Please don’t suffer in silence and let debt get out of hand.

Talk to us as early as possible so that we can help you avoid sinking into further debt:

  • We can check your savings balance - quite often our members are surprised by how much they’ve saved when it’s deducted from payroll.  You might have more in savings than you think!

  • We can help you consolidate your high interest debt into one manageable, lower interest monthly payment.  Ts/Cs apply.

  • Already have a loan with us and can’t afford the payments right now?  Please let us know so that we can look at an affordable repayment plan for you.

For free debt advice, we fully endorse speaking with a debt help charity such as CAP or StepChange.  Or you can also speak to Community Advice such as Ards and North Down CAAND (formerly Citizens Advice).

Please get in touch.
